A structured, attorney-led California Estate Plan review.
Estate plans don’t expire, but life changes and the law evolves. Does your plan reflect your current wishes? Whether you’re a Shafae Law client returning for a check-in or new to the firm with a plan created elsewhere, the Estate Planning Diagnostic helps you understand what you have, confirm it still fits your life, and take clear next steps.
Matthew M. Shafae is a Certified Specialist in Estate Planning, Trusts & Probate Law and focuses exclusively on California estate planning and trust administration. Through this retained service, he reviews your documents, meets with you remotely, and provides a written memo outlining what’s in place and what, if anything, may need updating. Choose the Diagnostic that fits your situation.
New Clients To Shafae Law
You have an estate plan in place, but you want clarity on what it does and whether it still reflects your goals today. This service is ideal if your plan was drafted years ago, prepared by another attorney, or your life has changed and you want an attorney-led review before moving forward.
-
Access to Goal-Setting Questionnaire: Complete our proprietary questionnaire in advance so the review focuses on what matters most to you.
Attorney Review of Your Existing Documents: Your attorney reviews your estate planning documents through the lens of trust administration experience and current California best practices.
Advice and Counsel in a Structured Zoom Meeting: A focused meeting with your attorney to review findings, answer questions, and discuss whether updates, amendments, or a restatement may be appropriate.
Written Summary Memo: A plain-English memo explaining what your plan does and outlining recommended next steps based on your goals and circumstances.
Trust Funding Guidance (Where Relevant): Identify gaps between what your plan says and how your assets are actually titled, so you know what is, and isn’t, covered.
What’s not included: Estate planning document drafting of any kind, financial advice, out-of-state matters, or any service not expressly described above.
-
Flat fee: $1,550 | This reflects a comprehensive attorney review of an estate plan drafted outside our firm and all other included services.
Your Diagnostic fee is credited: If a full estate plan or trust restatement is recommended and you decide to move forward with Shafae Law, your $1,550 Diagnostic fee is credited in full toward the standard estate planning flat fee. Think of it as a deposit on clarity.
Because your intake and supporting questionnaire responses and documents are already completed during the Diagnostic, you’ll enter our estate planning process at the Design and Review stage. (See Estate Planning Details.)
Existing Clients of Shafae Law
Your estate plan is in place, and our ongoing support hasn’t changed. If Shafae Law drafted your plan, we’re still available to answer general questions about your documents at no additional charge.
The Estate Planning Diagnostic is for clients who want a deeper, structured review; bringing your documents, current assets, trust funding, and next steps into one clear picture. Your attorney will review your asset documentation to confirm titling and trust funding, answer your questions in a focused meeting, and provide a written memo with clear recommendations based on any changes in your goals or life circumstances. If you’d like, you may also invite your successor trustee for a guided orientation so they feel confident stepping in when the time comes.

Yes. If Shafae Law drafted your plan, we’re still available to answer general questions about it at no additional charge. The Estate Planning Diagnostic is different: it’s a structured, attorney-led service where Matthew dedicates time to review your current asset documentation to confirm titling and trust funding, and provide a written memo explaining what your plan does and outlining clear next steps in light of any changes in your goals or life circumstances. Existing clients may also choose to invite a successor trustee to a guided orientation so they understand their future role and feel confident stepping in when the time comes.
-
No. For joint plans (married or registered domestic partners), both spouses/partners must attend the Diagnostic meeting.
-
Not always. Many plans still work well, even years later. The purpose of the Diagnostic is to confirm whether your documents still reflect your wishes and current circumstances and, if changes are advisable, to explain what and why in plain English.
-
Yes. The Diagnostic is designed to help you understand what you have and whether it’s likely to work as intended under California law, even if it wasn’t created by Shafae Law.
-
The Diagnostic is only as strong as the information available for review. We strongly encourage you to gather and upload a complete set of documents for the most accurate findings and recommendations. If anything is missing, we’ll tell you what to look for so you can fill the gaps.
If you have any other questions or are ready to understand your estate plan and feel confident about what comes next, schedule a complimentary 30-minute consultation.
